The First Parish Priest and Goberndorcillo
Fr. Francisco Ariola, an Augustinian priest from Spain took office as the first parish priest on August 21, 1859 and the first gobernadorcillo was Don Alejandro Valenzuela. In 1871 to 1878 the parish priest, Fr. Francisco Royo replaced the church with a new church made of stone which was destroyed by fire. Thus the chapel of the cemetery was used until an earthquake destroyed it. In 1884, Fr. Juan Giron built a temporary church made of bamboo and nipa which was again destroyed by fire in the same year during the fiesta. In 1885 he rebuilt the church using a strong materials of masonry and brick. In 1889 Fr. Martin Arcona began the construction of the bell tower and the restoration of the convent. In 1894, the convent was again restored by Fr. Miguel de Vera.
