Historical Significance of the Church

During the Philippine Revolution,  Barasoain became the  seat of the government of Emilio Aguinaldo. It was here where the First Philippine Congress was convened on September 15, 1898 which drafted the Malolos Constitution which is the first  Constitution in the country and first constitution in Asia.  On January 23, 1899 the  Constitution was ratified and on September 29, 1898 the  Philippine Independence proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898,  was declared. Thus the Philippine Republic was inaugurated. And Emilio Aguinaldo took the oath of Office as the First President of the Republic. On the other hand the convent housed the newly founded "Universidad Cientifica y Literaria de Filipinas" and the Instituto Burgos."
